There’s something overwhelming about today that may have you rushing to set barriers and boundaries. Do what you need to, but take the time to recognize what’s simply different from what you’re used to. When I studied abroad for a year in high school, my mentors told me to repeat the mantra “It’s not good. It’s not bad. It’s just different.” whenever I found myself facing the potential for culture shock. While cultural relativism has its limits, it’s good practice to defuse extreme triggers when you are in a position to do so. Do you need to flee for safety? If so, that’s priority. But if not or once you’re safe, take a moment to deconstruct the source of the fear and the real potential of it. When things feel overwhelming, it can be easier to just shut down rather than try to process it all. That’s a natural defense mechanism, and not just for immediate survival but for resource management: all that thinking burns a lot of calories, and the brain usually doesn’t want you to lose those reserves (a defense mechanism for long-term survival). But once you move past the fear, you might see the potential and the love behind it. Note that this type of overwhelm is an especially potent source of inspiration for creative endeavors, so if you’re looking for innovation or new ways of thinking, this is a great opportunity for you.
